The importance of protecting your computer

Posted by: Eric Flores

Eric Flores

Protecting your computer is not just about securing your personal information or using an virus_pcantivirus to prevent your computer's program from stop working. Lately, the most important reason to protect your computer is for preventing hackers from using your computer in ways that you didn't intend it to be used.

Whacker_passwordhen most people think about securing their computer they think about preventing identity theft, secure access to personal and financial information - in general, protecting from the damage that could happen to us. Theft of Paypal/eBay credentials, access to your bank accounts, credit card and investment/retirement account information, harvesting email and social account contacts, etc.

However, while all this is bad, this is the most innocent use that a hacker could make of your computer.  Lately, they see even more potential about what they can do with your computer, instead of what they can do to your computer:

  1. Once a hacker obtains control of a PC they can convert the PC in a web host and file hacker_remote_data_accesssharing server. They will store on this server any risky materials which they do not want to be traced to them: child pornography, illegal files, even electronic books on how to perform terrorist acts. Initially, you will be impacted because of your internet connection becoming slower. However, if the authorities track the procedence of these files they could trace them to your computer - placing your and your business at risk.

- Archivos

We love technology in general: computing technology, telecommunications, nanotechnology and all developments aimed to augment the human productivity and quality of life. However, the founding members of Dashway Technologies have a combined experience of almost 15 years in the biotechnology industry and thus, we reserve a special place to it in our hearts.

Many people, specially students have asked us what is biotechnology. So we decided to write this article in an attempt to explain it in the most simple terms.

The medicines of today
Most medicines in the market are based on simple chemical compounds found in nature, or made in a laboratory out of simple compounds. They are generally known as small molecules.
The exception to these are antibiotics, which are produced by a living organism (like penicillin and erythromicim) or synthetized from substances produced by a living organism (claritromicin is made by performing some changes to the erythromicin molecule). While somewhat bigger, antibiotics are still considered to be in the group of small molecules.
Biotechnology is generally about producing extremely big and complex protein molecules which are only produced by living organisms. This size and complexity makes this molecule very delicate and difficult to process. Sometimes a biotechnology product which is succesfully made in a laboratory, is very challenging to produce in large scale.
The benefits of biotechnology therapy
In the past, the insulin aministered to diabetics was produced by animals. Given its source, the human body did not react to it very well. Thanks to biotechnology it has been possible to have bacteria generate human insulin out of human DNA. This human insulin is perfectly compatible with humans and thus, generally well accepted and effective.
Harnessing the abilities of the bacteria
Bacteria has two types of DNA. The regular one is in the nucleous. However the one that give it superpowers is outside the nucleous and is called Plasmid DNA. This DNA is very simple, in the shape of a ring, and can be transferred from one bacteria to other bacterias (even different type) by simple contact. This DNA stores the genetic code that gives the bacteria its adaptive abilities like antibiotic-resistance.
http://www.iptv.org/exploremore/ge/what/insulin.cfm
What the scientifics do is that they split this ring and insert in the middle a chunk of human DNA. Then they insert the ring back in the bacteria, and place the bacteria in liquid full of food for the bacteria to reproduce into a colony. Each of these bacteria will produce, among other things, the protein that the inserted human DNA was programmed to produce. However, the desired protein still inside the celular wall of the bacteria. The tricky part is opening the bacteria to extract its content, and then separating the desired protein from all the other substances inside the bacteria, without damaging it.
Notice that all this process must be performed in a perfectly sterile environment, as it is not possible to use heat or chemicals to kill viruses or other germs without damaging the desired protein. So, after the bacteria is opened, the desired protein is separated using different filter types (some of them are similar to the filters used to process beer). The rest of the process is to formulate the drug to correct concentration and package it. The final product is stored at very low temperatures to protect it from damage.
What else is to this industry?
Well, the process explained above is the core of the concept. However, this fall shorts of understanding the whole process for creating a new biotechnology drug. R&D departments in biotechnology companies dedicate millions of dollars to investigate and explore potential candidates for new drugs. This process is lead by biotechnology scientifics but is also supported by Information Technology analysts dedicated to bioinformatics. These bioinformatics professionals apply Data Mining techniques to the DNA sequences being analyzed to try to find patterns on the genoma associated to specific human conditions.
There is also huge crews of scientifics and supporting personnel dedicated to support phase one, two and three clinical trials. And, there are also other teams with scientifics and engineers dedicated to transform the laboratory process into a industial level factory that will produce exactly the same product developed in the laboratory.
Career opportunities
What I like about Bachelor degree programs in biotechnology like this one http://www.uprm.edu/biotech/ , is that after completing it you have the option to go directly to the labor market to work at a biotechnology manufacturing plant or continue graduate studies in Genetic Engineering, Sciences or Bioinformatics to support the R&D process.

Como proteger a tu familia de sites inapropiados?

Posted by: Eric Flores

Eric Flores

There is no substitute for proper parent supervision. We recommend that you keep your desktop on a shared home area close to were you spend most of your time, so that you don't leave your children unsupervised while surfing the net. However, there is also some great and free technology that you can use to help you protect your family. This software might reduce the possibility of having to deal with a undesirable web site that you or your child could reach by accident.

OpenDNS is one of the most simple and effective of these solutions, and is what I use to protect my family. The video includes instruction on how to configure OpenDNS for use via your local router. The advantage of this configuration is that it protects all the computers in your house.

Notice that this will not prevent a technically proficient child from accessing adult content if he/she is determined to, but will work in most cases. In addition, this will work only when connected to internet from your home router. If you connect from a different location (school, public hotspot or neighbor wifi), you will need protection installed in the child's PC. We will visit those options in another article.

Desktop Applications Toolset - Core Edition - From the Archive

Posted by: Eric Flores

Eric Flores

If you buy or reinstall a new PC, you want it to be productive right now. In addition to the OS, you want a basic tool-set of low cost applications and no-compromises. This entry is the first of a series of articles on which we aim to offer application tool-sets tailored for specific needs.

This first entry focuses on 'core' applications used in general by most consumer and small business users. Please visit us again for other interesting editions.

  1. Office Suite - We had already commented on the word processors on a previous article, but we cannot mention core applications without covering and office suite. If you want the leading edge technology, we recommend OpenOffice (Windows, Mac, Linux). However, if the potential of corporate backed support is important for you, then you should look to IBM's Lotus Symphony (Windows, Mac, Linux). Notice that in both applications we recommend using the word processor, spreadsheet and presentations applications only. The Drawing application is not to the level of specialized tools.
  2. Images - Use Irfanview (Windows only) for simple image viewing, cropping, reizing and image format conversion (90% of what we do with an image is one of these). Together with the Plugins, it can read and convert to almost every image format under the sun. You might want to use Aviary Phoenix (Windows, Mac, Linux) for actual image editing. Notice that Aviary Phoenix is a web application. However, we are including it here because no other free desktop application provides this type of simple and powerful editing.
  3. Notes taking (journal) - Evernote (Windows, Max, iPhone and Linux via web) is the best tool in this area as it seamlessly synchronizes your desktop notes with the web, and make them available in your iphone whenever you need them.
  4. PDF management - Generate your PDf files by printing using the doPDF (Windows). Then, open them using PDF-XChange Viewer, which is more powerful than Adobe Reader.
  5. Video and multimedia player - VLC (Windows, Mac, Linux) plays almost every video and audio format, in addition to supporting several multimedia tricks. It can even load subtitles from a text file, and be controlled via ethernet from another computer (for Home Automation).
  6. IM Client - If you need to stay communicated with partners, customers and others, Pidgin (Windows, Mac, Linux) might be the best solution for you. Pidgin supports connecting several social protocol and servers (Gtalk, Yahoo!, etc).
  7. Social Clients - TwitterDeck and Seesmic are both very good tools to monitor and post into both, Twitter and Facebook accounts. These two applications require the installation of Adobe AIR (Windows, Max, Linux).

This list the roundup of core office tools. Notice that we tried to be as platform independent as possible, as you do not need to be locked into a specific OS to be productive.

Do you have other favorite applications? Please register and let us know via the comments below.

Best iPhone Applications for Business "From the Archive"

Posted by: Eric Flores

Eric Flores

While the Apple iPhone has not conquered the corporate Information Technology official ranks, users are already taking advange of the many applications that it has to offer. Here is a list of useful applications for small, and not so smallevernote_share business users.

  1. Evernote - This tool is not exclusive for the iPhone. Actually, that is what makes it so useful. Evernote allows you to keep an access your notes, pictures and other information wherever your are. You can access your notes using a web browser, the Windows or OS X programs, the iPhone or the Blackberry. Anything that you capture in one device is accesible one the other ones. And because it has character recognition, you can find pictures even by searching the text inside of them. Ideal for searching scanned or photographed business cards. So, have important reference information is good, but being able to share with all your field force is much better. Evernote allows you to keep separate notebooks. In one of these notebooks you can store the most current price list, the list of out-of-stock products, reference information and even pictures of your products. And, whenever you refresh the price list, all your sales force will also get the new version of the price list - no need to discriminate between price list versions as it happens when you use e-mail.

What is Open Source Software? "From the archive"

Posted by: Eric Flores

If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants. - Isaac Newton

Some people equate open source to free of payment software, but this not necessarily true, nor the most important aspect of the open source movement. Actually, all business people know that "there is nothing like a free lunch". Even when software is free of license cost, there is at least an implicit cost of implementation.
